Koombana Bay's lighting concept was primarily to reflect the surrounding features of Bunbury’s working Portand relationship of the site to Koombana Bay’s history of Whaling and Ship wrecks, of which there are 13 recorded.
The concept was to express form and colour to help reflect the key elements, whilst integrating lighting into the Urban built form features and fabric. The key objective was to use light as a medium to help reinforce the meaning of forms, spaces and environment, whilst providing lighting for safe movement and a feeling of security.
Equally important was the need to create a hierarchy of light due to the scale of the site, the need to connect various areas, communicate their purposes, as well as a Gateway into the City of Bunbury.
The resultant installation is a truly unique visual experience, bringing the aesthetic and functional requirements into an overall considered solution. The community response has been overwhelming, embracing the precinct, with its new transformation into a unique location in Bunbury, and in the State’s South West.
