Resource and Industry PROJECTS Gorgon Permanent Operations Centre
Project categories

The Gorgon project is Australia's largest single resources project and the installation of the LNG plant and accompanying Operations Centre and Laboratory Buildings are arguably the most important to the project's on-going success. The Operations Centre and Laboratory Buildings performs a number of functions vital to the operation of the overall project that includes the overall project monitoring and control via the Central Control Room and the provision of data and telephony services to the project. Additionally, the operation building also functions as an administrative centre where key personnel work and operate in an office environment.

Due to the importance of the building to the operation of the project, it was decided that the entire building architectural, structural and services designs would be 3D modelled in the AutoDesk REVIT package. This allowed an unprecedented level of documentation detail and services coordination ensuring all potential major issues were identified during design stage and not during construction. The result is a Virtual Construction Model (VCM) that contractors on the ground will use to construct the building. The limited scope allowed to the contractor to deviate from the VCM has meant that a greater emphasis is put on the designer to ensure that the VCM accurately reflects the finished product which proved to be a significant challenge.
